"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"

Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs initially because of a blow to the head. Complications are common following the initial blow to the brain, due to a deficient supply of oxygen to the brain tissues or greater pressure within the skull.

What causes traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injuries may be caused by things such as:
  • Road accidents
  • Falls
  • Violence
Following discharge from hospital people who have sustained TBI’s still have potential for great improvement over the coming years through physiotherapy input.

What happens when you come to Manchester Physio?

Your initial appointment at Manchester Physio will involve a subjective assessment, where your physiotherapist will discuss your condition with you (and family and carers if appropriate), to gain an insight into your injury, as well as your current problems and past medical history. An objective assessment will follow examining your physical capabilities, including looking at:
  • Ability to roll / move in bed / sit /stand
  • Range of movement
  • Balance in sitting and standing (if appropriate)
  • Postural control
  • Upper and lower limb function
  • Strength
  • Mobility
Following the combined assessment findings you and your physiotherapist will discuss realistic goals for your rehabilitation, and a rehabilitation programme will be created to address your individual needs.

Treatment

Physiotherapy treatment for traumatic brain injury may include:
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Retraining normal patterns of movement
  • Functional exercises for upper and lower limbs
  • Practice and advice regarding functional activities (for example bed mobility, sitting / standing)
  • Postural control exercises
  • Teaching wheelchair usage
At Manchester Physio our specialist physiotherapists normally provide exercises to be continued between treatment sessions.
