"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"

Stroke

Physiotherapists at Manchester Physio in Sale are experienced in treating people affected by a stroke.

What causes a stroke?

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts causing a bleed (haemorrhagic stroke), or when a blood clot in an artery occludes the flow of blood to the brain (ischaemic stroke). There is not necessarily one specific cause for a stroke, but there are many contributing risk factors, including:
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Smoking
  • Hyperthyroidism

What should you expect when you attend Manchester Physio?

Initially, your physiotherapist will take a detailed account of your condition and current symptoms, previous level of mobility, and past medical history. A thorough physical assessment will follow, this will involve looking at:
  • Active and Passive range of movement
  • Function in lying, rolling, sitting, standing
  • Mobility
  • Sensation
  • Muscle tone
Following your assessment your physiotherapist will diagnose your problems, and you and your physiotherapist (along with your family and carers if appropriate), will create shared, realistic goals before treatment commences.

Treatment

A treatment programme will be created unique to your needs. Common treatment methods include:
  • Postural control and awareness
  • Balance exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Normalising movement patterns
  • Walking practice (if appropriate)
  • Advice and education
  • Recommendations for home adaptations and equipment, walking aids
