Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal Cord Injury
A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage sustained to the spinal cord which causes a loss or impaired function resulting in decreased feeling or mobility.
What causes Spinal Cord Injury?
Common causes for spinal cord injury include:
- Trauma (for example sports injuries, car accidents, falls)
- Disease (spina bifida, transverse myelitis, polio, Freidreich’s Ataxia)
What happens when you come to Manchester Physio?
Your first appointment with Manchester Physio will involve a subjective assessment, where your physiotherapist will ask you questions about the injury you sustained and your current condition and symptoms, as well as taking a thorough past medical history. This will be followed by an objective assessment, a physical examination looking at:
- Functional activities
- Active and Passive range of movement
- Balance
- Strength
- Sensation
- Observation of posture
- Mobility
Following your initial assessment you and your physiotherapist will discuss short and long term goals that are realistic. Your treatment programme will depend on the location and level of your Spinal Cord Injury and your resulting symptoms. Treatment will begin at your first assessment.
