Cerebral Palsy
Adults and children with cerebral palsy are commonly treated by skilled physiotherapists at Manchester Physio in Sale. Many people with Cerebral Palsy will benefit from Physiotherapy right through their life.
What causes Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is caused by an injury to the brain prior to, during, or shortly following birth. In many cases the reason for the brain damage is unknown. Generally there are two problems that can result in cerebral palsy:
- Neurological damage to the child’s developing brain
- Developmental brain malformation (failure of the brain to develop correctly)
- These can include bleeding into the brain, lack of oxygen to the brain, or infection (for example meningitis)
What happens at your first appointment with Manchester Physio?
Initially a subjective examination will be conducted by the physiotherapist, to obtain a detailed account of your problem, current symptoms, past medical history and previous mobility level. This will be followed by an objective assessment (physical assessment) which will look at:
- Passive and Active range of movement
- Muscle tone
- Sensation
- Function in lying, rolling, sitting, standing
- Gait (if appropriate)
Your physiotherapist will work with you (and your carers and family if suitable) to set goals for you. A treatment programme will be created to meet your requirements.
Treatment
Treatment for cerebral palsy will vary depending on symptoms and problems, but may include:
- Range of movement and stretching exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Facilitatory techniques to normalise movement patterns
- Neurodevelopmental techniques
