"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"

Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain is one of the most common conditions treated at the Manchester Physio Sale clinic.

What causes shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain can be caused by many reasons, such as:
  • Shoulder instability
  • Rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Acromioclavicular joint trauma
  • Arthritis
  • Biceps tendon rupture
  • Labral tear
  • SLAP lesion
What will happen on your first appointment at Manchester Physio?

Subjective assessment

Your subjective assessment will involve your physiotherapist taking a thorough history of your problem, asking questions regarding:
  • When the pain began, did anything cause it
  • Location, nature and behaviour of the pain
  • Past medical history
  • Any current medication
  • Work and leisure activities
Objective assessment

The objective assessment is a physical examination which looks at:
  • Passive and active range of movement of the shoulder complex
  • Muscle strength
  • Areas of tenderness
  • Reflexes
  • Sensation
  • Special tests
  • Other joints may also be looked at, including the cervical and thoracic spine
Following the objective assessment the physiotherapist will diagnose the problem and inform you whether or not physiotherapy would be advantageous. If physiotherapy is suitable treatment will begin straight away.

Treatment

Many treatment techniques can be used to treat a multitude of shoulder problems, such as:
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Advice and education
  • Correction of posture
  • Electrotherapy
  • Soft tissue release
  • Massage
  • Ice and heat therapy
Exercises are often provided for patients to perform between physiotherapy sessions, to speed up recovery.
