Pelvic pain

The Physiotherapists at Manchester Physio in Sale are experienced in treating patients with pelvic pain. Pelvic pain is far more common in women than men, and in some instances can be a sign for serious health concern. Various conditions in the lower back can lead to pain in the pelvic area.


What causes pelvic pain?



A range of problems can cause pelvic pain including:
  • Muscular injury
  • Sprained ligament in the lower back or pelvis
  • Impinged nerves leading to the pelvis and pelvic organs
  • Slipped disc
Other:
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Endometriosis
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS)
  • Prostatitis
  • Pelvic adhesive disease
  • Ovarian or uterine conditions

What to expect when you come to Manchester Physio?



Subjective assessment

This is a verbal assessment where the physiotherapist will ask you a number of questions about the problem, including:
  • Duration the pain has been present and how the problem occurred
  • Origin of the pain
  • Prior range of movement
  • What aggravates/eases the pain?
Objective assessment

This is a physical examination that includes assessment of:
  • Quality of movement
  • Range of movement
  • Areas of tenderness
  • Muscle strength
  • Sensation
  • Reflexes
  • Special tests
  • Assessing other joints which may be involved

Treatment



From these assessments a diagnosis of the problem will be formed. If physiotherapy treatment is appropriate a plan of treatment will be created in conjunction with advice, which will begin immediately. Common treatments for pelvic pain include:
  • Postural exercises
  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Pain reduction techniques
  • Core stability
  • Biofeedback
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Electrical stimulation
