Neck pain
Neck pain is one of the most common conditions treated by the Manchester Physio physiotherapists in Sale.
What causes neck pain?
A number of problems can cause neck pain, including:
- Poor posture
- Nerve root compression
- Disc prolapse
- Joint sprain
What happens at your first appointment with Manchester Physio?
The first part of the examination is the subject assessment; this involves the physiotherapist asking questions regarding:
- Onset of the pain
- Behaviour, location and nature of the pain
- Past medical history
- Current medication
- Work and leisure activities
Objective examination
The objective examination is a physical assessment; it includes:
- Examining posture
- Checking movements and range of motion of the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and shoulder joints
- Muscle power
- Reflexes
- Sensation
- Palpation
Following the assessments your physiotherapist will diagnose your problem, whether physiotherapy can help, and if not what the best course of action is. If physiotherapy is appropriate treatment will commence there and then, including the provision of exercises to be continued between physiotherapy treatments. Treatment techniques include:
- Education and advice
- Posture correction
- Mobilisation and strengthening techniques
- Cervical traction
