"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"

Back pain

People suffering from back pain are regularly treated by the Manchester Physio physiotherapists in Sale.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can be a complex condition and can be caused by a variety of factors. Some reasons why people experience back pain include:
  • Poor posture
  • Muscular injury
  • Whiplash
  • Disc protrusion
  • Disc prolapse (‘slipped disc’)
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Collapsed vertebra
  • Fracture
  • Psychological problems (for example depression, stress)
  • Physical risk factors (for example jobs involving heavy lifting, awkward postures)

What happens at your first consultation with Manchester Physio?

Subjective assessment

This involves your physiotherapist taking a thorough history of your back pain, asking questions concerning:
  • Onset and cause of the back pain, if known
  • Behaviour, location and nature of the pain
  • Aggravating/easing factors
  • Past medical history
  • Any medication currently being taken
  • Work and leisure activities
Objective assessment

This is a physical examination of your back, which involves things such as:
  • Observation
  • Quality of movement
  • Active and passive range of movement
  • Palpation
  • Muscle strength
  • Sensation
  • Reflexes
  • Special tests
  • Joints above and below the suspected area may also be assessed, which may be the hip, Sacroiliac joint, and thoracic, lumbar or cervical spine ( depending on the area of the back in question)

Treatment

From the assessment findings the physiotherapist will then diagnose your problem and advice you on the best course of treatment to improve it. If physiotherapy methods are recommended then treatment will commence immediately. Common physiotherapy treatments for back pain include:
  • Core stability exercises
  • Postural exercises
  • Teaching correct lifting and handling techniques
  • Stretching
  • Range of movement exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Mobilisations
  • Acupuncture
  • Soft tissue release
  • Trigger pointing
  • Electrotherapy
