"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"

Ankle pain

Ankle pain is one of many conditions commonly treated by our specialist physiotherapists at Manchester Physio in Sale.

What causes ankle pain?

Ankle pain can be caused many things, for instance:
  • Arthritis
  • Sprains
  • Tendonitis (posterior tibial tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis)
  • Fractures
  • Cartilage damage
To ensure you receive the most suitable treatment for your problem, it is crucial first and foremost to get an accurate diagnosis.

What will happen at your first appointment with Manchester Physio?

Subjective assessment
First of all your physiotherapist will perform a subjective assessment. This entails asking a number of questions to get to the root of the problem, including:
  • How the problem occurred
  • The duration of the problem
  • The origin, nature and behaviour of the pain
  • Past medical history
  • Current medication
Objective assessment

This is a physical examination of your ankle. It involves looking at things such as:
  • Observation of the ankle joint
  • Foot posture
  • Range of movement (passive and active)
  • Muscle strength
  • Palpation
  • Sensation
  • Reflexes
  • Special tests

Treatment

Your physiotherapist will then use the assessment findings to diagnose your problem. Your physiotherapist will then discuss your best options with regards to treatment; if physiotherapy is appropriate then a treatment plan will be devised and treatment commenced straight away. A number of different treatments can be used to help ankle problems including:
  • Balance exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Deep tissue frictions
  • Mobilisations
  • Footwear modifications / orthotics
  • Electrotherapy
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Rest
  • Ice and heat therapy
